The Girl On The Train

This is not a review or it kinda is.  I won't be talking about the story.

I used to be a constant reader.  When I was young I walked to the library and spent hours searching out books.  Sometime in my early thirties I stopped reading. Several of my blog friends are promote reading and have inspired me to reacquaint myself with the written story.

I didn't really know about this book until I heard they had made a movie of it.  We don't go to the theatre much so I decided to buy the book.  I usually like books better than the movie version anyway.

For me this book was really hard to get involved in.  I think at about page 60 or so I wanted to know where the tale was going.  But things happen and I put it down for a few days.  When I started reading again it was hard to remember what I had already read.  The last week of pre-election coverage sent me back to the book.  I really did want to know how it was going to end.  I have to say, I really didn't see the end coming.  It was more of ahh, haaa that OH WOW though.

The movie was rated 1-1/2 stars, a sure tell to me that I don't want to go.  I can see why...not much to work with here for a movie.

Since The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo was published, there are been a slew of "Girl" books hit the market.

If you read, or saw the movie The Girl On The Train, I'd love to know what you thought of either of them.

In the mean time, I'm going to read "Somebody I Used To Know" by David Bell.

  2. I saw it on Amazon and it intrigued me. It had elements of things I enjoy in a book, mostly mystery. I have a Kindle so I ordered a free sample. Suffice to say that after reading the sample I wasn't prompted to order the whole book. When the movie came out I thought I had missed something, but only 1-1/2 stars says maybe not. Thanks, Carol.

  3. HI Ms. Carol!! I have not read the book or watched the movie... I do like the actress they have playing the lead role though and if it was a hubby type movie i might have gone... So i appreciate your review! You may have saved me from buying the video... I find i cannot always follow the professional critics.. the ones that present the stars as i often disagree with them.... Hugs! deb

  4. It has gotten a ton of reviews that have varied widely. For some reason, I didn't want to read it--maybe because it was so frequently compared to Gone Girl. And you are right about the slew of books with "Girl" in the title!

  5. I haven't read it -- have heard about the movie but with 1-1/2 stars won't be getting it from Netflix *smile*!

  6. Well-wish I could offer some insight on this, but I didn't read the book or see the movie-I'm afraid my book reading has taken a back seat to making things. I don't like that-I know I need to relax and read more. I also used to read like crazy, and libraries were my favorite places to hang out. I still do buy books and always enjoy hanging out at Barnes and Noble. I still buy books, but they seem to be about art or creating-hmmmmm-I think I should get back into plain ole reading for enjoyment!

  7. I actually liked the book and was like you...WHAT..WOW...Gone Girl was one book I had a hard time with but I did like the movie. Haven't seen Girl on the Train movie...yet...might just wait until it's on Netflix! HA I listen to books on tape every day...cleaning; drying my hair, sewing...just put in the old ear buds and listen away. I only read a hard cover book at night in bed while hubby watches TV/news. Works for me!

  8. Doesn't sound as though all the hype around this one is worth it. I love to read and am always grateful for our local library. I don't have time to read as much as I'd like though, so I have to be choosy about what I pick up.

  9. I used to read avidly but now I tend to listen to books serialised on the radio so I can knit or crochet at the same time. I heard The Girl on the Train and I thought it was ok but nothing amazing. Then my daughters went to see the movie and thought it was all right but they didn't recommend it. So I suppose from us it would be 5-6 out of 10. I hope you enjoy "Somebody I Used To Know" by David Bell. I haven't read (or heard) that :)

  10. Morning, You just saved me some time. I have had the book since before the movie. Wasn't much to choose from that day so I picked it up. I usually buy at least
one book a week when I do my grocery shopping. That way I always have a new book to start. That is how I unwind at night so I can sleep.
    Have a good day.

  11. I haven't read this or your other book. Mostly I get books through Bookbub.com for free or low cost and have plenty of them to read. I stopped reading when blogging came around and I joined the Bead Journal Project. I was so intrigued by the sudden opening of my world that books went by the wayside. Now I am feeling jaded by a lot of the internet so am trying to get back into reading. Life keeps moving on doesn't it, through one phase after another!

  12. I read the book earlier in the year (checked out an e-copy from the library) after seeing it on a couple book lists on blogs. I thought it was good, but struggled at the beginning with the premise of the story. I mean really, would you get involved? But it had a great finale, and I'm glad I read it. Heard recently they were making a movie, but I didn't know it was already released.

  13. Hubby and I just watched "The Girl on the Train". It is a French film and not like this current version at all. Happy Reading...
