Trippin' Over My Own Feet

Yup, I'm kind of out of commission.  I did what my mother called Tripping Over My Own Feet.  But let me back up for a moment.

We had 1-1/2 weeks of crummy cold and rainy weather.  You know, the kind that grass and weeds thrive in.  So when Tuesday was sunny and warm, I trotted over to my daughter's house to dig out some plants that she wanted to give to me before she rips them out to put in a patio. Digging them out, prepping a new spot in my garden, and planting the new additions after a long winter's nap, so to speak, was pretty tiring.

Then my sis called.  Wanted me to go to the grocery store.  By this time it was 3:30.  Nope, not today, but I complied and trekked out to McDonald's for her.

Now, let me tell you that I suffer from Sciatic issues.  All that bending and digging aggravated it A Lot.  But still, I insisted that the geraniums on the front deck needed water.  On my way up the stairs, I tripped on the top stair which launched...yes launched my body forward.  Since I had water in my right hand, I broke my fall with my left.  The LAUNCH part bent my left hand backward.  I ended up spraining my wrist, thumb and pinkie finger. I'm feeling the sprain all the way up to my left shoulder.

I have been sleeping on and off for two days.  This fall zapped my energy!! I think all of it went to my left side to assist the healing process. I'm 64 and I'm thinking it takes me longer and longer to bounce back from this stuff.  I took the brace off today just to see how I'm doing.  The welling is down but still can't go without it. But I'll show the Universe...I will NOT be kept down.  I'm going out today to see what I can do with one good arm!!

  1. Oh so sorry. I hope it heals quickly. At our age we do take longer to heal. I also have sever sciatica. It is pretty bad. Getting old sucks. LOL Get better!

  3. Oh, no! You are so lucky that it was only a sprain--which as you mention, is bad enough when we are in our sixties! Wishing you quick healing!

  4. Bless your heart! I hope you continue to heal with each new day. I'm 67 and this morning after almost 2 hours of working outside, I tripped over my own feet at the end, and said to myself, OK that's it for now, finished what I was doing and came inside.

  5. Must be something in the air, Carol. Or else it's just that aging is making us less agile and more prone to accidents. I slammed a door on my hand, and after a week and a half of hurting, I finally had it checked. Seems I had fractured a bone in my ring finger clear through. Doctor's office wondered why I waited so long, but I just thought it would be fine. Does aging also make us stupid? I have a small splint, but thankfully I can still knit.

  6. Oh dear - so sorry you have hurt yourself! Take care of you, and tell those wayward feet to watch where they're going.

  7. OMG!!! Shades of me two months ago (I'm able to go without the brace but pain still there!) but I didn't fall. I can feel your pain!!!! Just makes you feel sick and we don't like being sick, do we!! Take it easy...your body will tell you what you can and can't do...

  8. Carol, you poor thing! And good on you for such a positive attitude in trying to see what you can manage with one arm. Hope all the ouches feel a lot better soon.

  9. Oh dear heart -- I'm so sorry to hear about this. Any fall after the age of 35 seems bad to me *smile*! Please take good care of yourself and don't push it.

  10. Oh my, that's awful. Yes, we take longer to heal as we get older and we also get hurt easier at the same time! One handedness is hard isn't it? Good luck on gardening with just one!

  12. Carol, that sounds like a terrible fall! I hope it heals like you were 20. =) I find that some kinds of bruises and hits that land on bones take forever to heal. I hope your flowers are pretty!

  13. Hope it is beginning to feel a little better at least. I concur with the other comments that as we age we hurt more and heal more slowly.

  14. Dear Carol! I'm so sorry to hear that. But good for you that you refuse to be defeated! I'm sure you can do a lot with one arm but probably best to find a balance and make yourself rest too so you get properly better as soon as possible. I'll keep you in my thoughts, hugs :) xx

  15. Girl we just don't bounce like we use to. Gotta slow down and be more careful. It's a shame the geraniums are probably faring better than you are.
Hope you feeling much better soon. Hows your throw coming along?

  16. So sorry to read of your fall and sprain. Hope you heal quickly. For some reason unknown, the comments you leave on my blog do not appear in my inbox once I approve them. Nor are they in spam, or trash or anywhere else... weird! So I am replying here. The Solomon's Seal is easy to grow. Since it is a woodland plant it does prefer shade. It spreads a bit but is not invasive.

  17. Oh my goodness, Carol. We have to learn our limits at our age. Probably your tiredness contributed to your misstep. Rest up and don’t over do it (said your friend with a sore back from too much gardening yesterday). Do what I say, not what I do, LOL. Seriously, it is hard to accept that we can’t do what we once could. And there is no shame in saying NO to favors asked of you, either. xoxo

  18. OUch!! these falls after we get into our 60s are really bad-so sorry-when I fell down hard on cement which is probably just about 2 years now-I am realizing some of the damage now-I braced myself on the left side and I believe now that is why my hand is messed up and getting worse and I also re messed up my bad left knee more which is showing up now. Hope you will be feeling much better and less sore real soon-hugs
