Windows 10--or not?

I noticed this little box at the bottom of my monitor that I never noticed before.  TA DA...an offer to switch my Windows 7 to the new Windows 10.

Let me back up a little here.  I'm the person that came late to the Smart Phone party.  The same one that resisted Windows 8 when they bought me a new computer at work before I retired.
But we got Smart Phones and I became familiar with apps.  Now Microsoft is offering to give me a free update to Windows 10 when it becomes available on July 29.  I reserved a copy.  I have to admit that I hate Internet Explorer and I hope Edge is different not just a re-name. I'm pretty sure Microsoft will probably support Windows 7 for as long as I will probably own this computer, but you never know.  Just like the fashion industry, when they need sales they make what you own obsolete, lol.

If anyone has read anything CURRENT about why not to switch, let me know.  Most posts that I read from those that were given preview copies to test have not had any real issues.  At least not issues that make a difference to a technologically challenged senior.

  1. Yikes, I have that little icon too in my bar. My dear husband was the computer geek, I am 'flowerlady'. He hated windows 8, we both liked windows XP. I think I'll stay with what I have until I 'have' to move forward. Let us know what you do and what you think.

Have a great week ~ FlowerLady

  2. I'm a bit skeptical because Windows 8 was such a failure, at least in my eyes. I have so many programs on my computer that are compatible with my windows 7 that I'll need to make sure an upgrade is available for them before I change the operating system. Ugh, I'm not looking forward to this...

  3. You two (Carol and Lorraine) are way ahead of me, didn't even know there was a 10! I'm not up to date on desktop stuff since I got my iPad. I love that more than anything, and can do all I need with it. My sons are the ones I always check with about computer stuff, and their advice is usually to let others give new things a test run before taking part myself. That could negate the free version though. Another tip from them about browsers, they believe Firefox is the most secure. Carol, please keep us posted. We have a desktop at home that I'm sure will display the 10!

  5. I've got that same icon but am declining to accept the offer. I can't get rid of the icon though. I will change when I need a new computer. I'll be curious to see how you and your existing computer handle the change.

  10. You will have to update to 8 or 8.1 (can't remember which) but the new Windows 10 is suppose to have some of the 'old' windows features (start menu, etc.) so it will or can resemble what we used to like! HA A tech writer suggested those of us not 'up to speed' wait for a few weeks so all kinks are out of the way before we update to 10. I'll be updating but probably not until mid August. Gotta go with the flow!

  11. I'm on Windows 7 and think I'll just leave well enough alone. I like it and have heard bad things about Windows 8. Perhaps after Windows 10 has been around awhile I might take the chance. When it comes to computers, if its working I don't try to change anything *smile*.

  12. I got Windows 8 and hate it. They got rid of the tagging on photos and that's how I'd organized my photos! It was in the beta version so I had no idea they'd dump the whole photo handling program. I guess now you have to go get an app to do it but I want my tags back! That's what put me off the most plus its hard to get around. If 10 isn't greatly improved I will just have to go Apple.

  13. I heard such detrimental things about Win 8 and when I had to buy the new computer, it came with it. I was expecting the worst, but I actually ended up liking it a lot. Of course, to be fair, I don't do many in-depth things with my computer so perhaps the features I use are the good ones and the rest is iffy. I got the sign-up 'thing' today for 10 and put my foot in the water. Brave or stupid? Time will tell.
