Do You Know What A Kea Is?

If you know me, you know that I am a bird lover. I knew a Kia was a car, but I had never heard of a Kea.

My blogger friend in New Zealand posted about seeing a Kea. She has linked to THE MOST AMAZING video of how intellegent these birds are. Please visit her blog and take a moment to see the video. I guarantee you will be amazed.

  1. I'm glad I introduced you to these amazing birds! They are actually endangered due to over hunting years ago. But they are protected now - although a lot of people don't like them because they have a habit of dismantling your car. They use their beaks to strip out all the rubber bits!! They are very bold and will walk right up to you. How I would love to have one visit my garden - but they live right up in the mountains. I just adore them - and their feathers really are beautiful. When they open out their wings, they have bright orange feathers underneath.

  2. Wow Carol! Those are some smarty birds! Great video...except for the very end when the bird gets the little furry creature! Ahhhh!

  3. I've heard of them but never seen one, even a picture, until now. Did you know the crow uses simple tools like a twig for a pry bar? I was surprised at that and no, I can't lead you to where I read about it; it was a long time ago.

  4. There's just something about birds, isn't there? I was happy to have the link, and watch the video and marvel at the world around me...and I'm very glad to hear that they are so smart. Probably why they only live in New Zealand.

  5. Just amazing! Neither DH nor I had ever heard of them but when I first saw the photo, I thought of a parrot! We watched the video last night and couldn't believe how ingenious they are!
Thanks so much for the link :-D

  6. Carol, that is such a pretty bird and amazing.... You have no way of knowing this, but I have been searching for a picture of a Prinia bird, supposedly in New Zealand or that area. I had a friend named Prinia who passed away last year. She was from New Zealand. I can't seem to find any good photos of one. This immediately brought her to mind, although I know it's not what I was looking for it was a nice thought.

  7. That was a surprising video. First time I have heard of a Kea. At Houston I took pictures of every bird on every quilt that had one. Inspiration for something to do with birds.
